Derbyshire Battery Storage Case Study.

Learn how this home owner cut their bills by almost £1000/year

Our approach: analyse first, design second

When this customer first approached us, before we talked spec, we needed to understand his actual use energy. For this project we analysed historic usage patterns, existing solar performance and the available tariff options. After careful consideration the team at Pogo then sized the battery bank and inverter power to match typical day time and evening loads and the short off peak periods overnight. The system was designed to charge when electricity is cheapest and discharge when prices spike, reducing daytime grid draw and smoothing bills dramatically.

It’s all in the design – Key differences

Many all in one batteries are limited by lower charge and/or discharge rates. For instance a single Tesla Powerwall 3 has a peak Inverter output of 11kw but a charge rate of only 5kW. Given the demands in the property, our design focus was on both capacity and power, so the home can top up quickly overnight and comfortably run heavier loads without drawing from the grid. For this reason, a high power inverter with limited charge/discharge rates was not acceptable. Low voltage home batteries typically operate at around 50volts, the standard packaged cables (25sqmm) will not carry the current required to run at the inverter’s full power. This meant that the standard cabling and configuration needed an upgrade. Our assessments also showed that a small battery of 10 or 13.5kWh would not provide enough power through the day for a significant portion of the year, this meant increasing storage to more than 20kwh. The SolarImmersion was replaced and configured to follow battery storage so once the battery is at 100%, any surplus solar power is redirected to the hot water storage cylinder. To maximise financial performance the system needed to work in conjunction with the Octopus Go tariff which offers off peak electricity at 7p/unit.

Why 8kW Matters

  • Faster overnight top ups at super cheap rates
  • Better coverage for cooking, laundry and EV top ups during the day
  • Extra headroom versus systems capped at lower power levels

Future ready options

If the homeowner wants even more headroom later, the design allows for additional solar to be added while also keeping the pathway open for expanded storage or new loads.

Installation and compliance

  • Planned as a garage installation for safety, access and tidy routing.
  • We manage DNO notifications and permissions and secured the 8kW Inverter with a G100 Export limit of 5kW (but the system will rarely export so this wasn’t a problem).
  • On site time two days, handled by our installation team, with commissioning and handover included.
  • MCS accredited install with clear, transferable warranties and 5 year insurance backed labour cover from Pogo Energy.
